Once DNA has been preserved at our UK facility, the pet’s genetics can be stored indefinitely. This means the DNA can be kept in storage for as long as required by the animal owner.

What is Pet Genetic Preservation?

Pet genetic preservation refers to the preservation of cat, dog and horse DNA, so that it can be stored indefinitely, and used in the future. At Gemini Genetics, the DNA is preserved to create a genetic twin to the original donor animal. i.e. to allow for cloning of the original cat, dog or horse. Pet genetic preservation involves firstly sterilization of the genetic sample, to ensure high quality DNA preservation, followed by storage of the DNA at -196 degrees Celsius using our specialized protective freezing agent. This freezing agent is critical to ensure the preserved DNA retains its living format and so can be used in the future for cloning of your cat, dog or horse.

Pet Genetic Preservation Sample Type

Genetic preservation starts with a skin sample taken from your cat, dog or horse. This skin sample contains the DNA of your original animal and its whole genetic profile. The skin sample can be taken while your animal companion is alive, upon veterinary approval, or after your pet has passed away. You have 5 days after your pet has passed away to submit a skin sample for DNA preservation. The animal’s skin sample should be kept chilled and never frozen ahead of submission, to optimise the opportunity for viable DNA recovery.

Once the cat, dog or horse skin sample has arrived at our UK facility, we use our state of the art DNA cryopreservation facilities and over 30 years of experience in regenerative DNA preservation, to safely cryopreserve and store your pets genetics.
